HURRICANE BERYL DELAYS VICTORIOUS INDIAN TEAM'S RETURN, 70-MEMBER TEAM STRANDED IN BARBADOS

Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, has delayed the victorious Indian team's return to the country. According to reports, the hurricane had intensified with maximum sustained winds of 210 kmph, thus making air travel extremely unsafe. While the Indian team was supposed to return by Tuesday, now their return will be delayed by at least a day.

The Category 4 hurricane was about 570km east-southeast of Barbados and there are reports that the airport in Bridgetown will shut in the evening.

The Indian team was supposed to take an Emirates flight from New York via Dubai.

"The team was supposed to leave from here (Bridgetown) to New York and then reach India via Dubai. But now the plan is to get a charter flight straight from here to Delhi. A meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also being considered," a source told PTI.

The Indian contingent, including support staff, families and officials, consists of about 70 members. Tropical storm-force winds are expected to reach the Windward Islands in North America on late Sunday or early Monday.

The early timing of the season’s first hurricane is unusual, given the average date for the first hurricane is August 11, according to a report in CNN. As of 8 p.m. ET (5:30 am IST), Beryl was about 200 miles southeast of Barbados, heading west.
