AS HE PROTESTS AGAINST KEJRIWAL’S ARREST, RAJYA SABHA ANNOUNCES REVOCATION OF AAP MP SANJAY SINGH’S SUSPENSION

The revocation of the suspension of Sanjay Singh, the Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP from Delhi, was announced on Thursday, almost a year after he was barred from the proceedings of the Upper House.

The action against Singh had come after an escalation of friction between the Opposition, which was demanding a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on the Manipur situation followed by a discussion, and the government, on July 24 last year.

As the announcement came, however, Singh along with representatives from the Samajwadi Party, the AAP’s INDIA bloc ally, happened to be protesting against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the CBI in the liquor policy case on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the AAP announced that it would boycott the President’s address in protest against the Centre’s “dictatorial” action against the AAP convener.

“Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested and put in jail by CBI when he was likely to get bail from the Supreme Court and he had got bail from the trial court. The prime minister should stop the misuse of investigating agencies,” Singh said.

“We will boycott the President’s speech because it is written by the government and big statements will be made about democracy in it. But on the contrary, the Constitution is being crushed all over India. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain were arrested. That is why we are protesting here and opposing the President’s address,” he added.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had announced Singh’s suspension, announced its revocation in a statement issued on Thursday. “Hon’ble Members, you may recall that Shri Sanjay Singh, Hon’ble Member, was suspended from the service of the House on 24th July, 2023 till the Committee of Privileges submits its findings,” the statement said.

On June 26, the vice-president stated further, the Committee on Privileges of the Rajya Sabha presented its 77th and 78th reports on pending matters against Singh.

“The Committee, while holding Shri Sanjay Singh guilty of breach of privilege of the Council in all the cases, recommended that the Member has already suffered sufficient punishment for the transgression,” the statement added.

Following this, said Dhankhar, he had invoked authority vested in him as chairman under Rules 202 and 266 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) to revoke Singh’s suspension with effect from Wednesday, June 26.
