RSS POINTS TO BREACH IN DALIT VOTE BANK BEHIND BJP'S UP POLL DEBACLE

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said a breach in the Dalit and backward classes vote bank of the BJP by the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance was behind the party's debacle in the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha polls, sources said.

The matter was discussed during a meeting held by the RSS, which was attended by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, to review the BJP's poll performance. The BJP failed to get a majority on its own and formed the government with help from its allies.

The meeting discussed several aspects of the saffron party's poll performance.

The RSS said it believed that the reason for the decrease in BJP's seats was the increasing anger among the youth regarding unemployment and paper leaks.

The Sangh has now decided to work on issues like employment and reach out to Dalits and the backward classes.

"The reason for BJP's defeat in UP is mainly considered to be the breach in the vote bank of Dalits and backward classes by the India alliance led by SP-Congress", RSS said.

"The Sangh and the BJP believe that this vote bank got scattered and fell into SP's favour. In this context, the Sangh is now focusing on the strategy of increasing penetration among Dalits and the backward classes. More of the programs and exercises are now being focused on these communities," the RSS said.

After the election results, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was in Gorakhpur for five days in mid-June. During his visit, the current political situation and social concerns were discussed. After that, a four-day review meeting of officials of the eastern region began in Lucknow on June 26.

According to sources, the Sangh will now work on a plan to increase employment opportunities for the youth for the first time. RSS officials will hold a discussion regarding employment generation with business persons and industrialists. There will be more emphasis on cottage industries, sources said.

On the other hand, the RSS will also work to promote "swadeshi". During a meeting of the national council of the Sangh it was stressed that the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) scheme would be promoted.

RSS said work will be done to connect more and more young people with Dalits and backward classes.

In a separate meeting with the district campaigners of the Sangh, it was decided that the outfit would also boost its presence in colleges and universities.

For this, student branches will be set up in all the districts. Moreover, a contact campaign will also be expedited. For this, the Sangh will give training to new campaigners.
