'BE ON YOUR BEST BEHAVIOUR': PM MODI'S ADVICE TO MPS DAY AFTER RAHUL GANDHI'S REMARKS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a message for NDA MPs a day after the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi lambasted the central government in the parliament, creating a ruckus in the House.

On Tuesday, PM Modi held a Parliamentary meeting with his NDA partners where he advised leaders to be on their best behaviours during sessions, an apparent dig at Gandhi, parts of whose speech in the Lok Sabha was expunged.

The NDA Parliamentary meeting comes ahead of PM Modi's address in the Lok Sabha, to be held on Tuesday, where he will present his motion of thanks to the President's address.

What did PM Modi say?

After walking out of the meeting, NDA and BJP leaders shared instructions given by the prime minister ahead of today's session.

"Today, the PM gave us a mantra which is very important. He said that every MP has been elected to the House to serve the nation. Irrespective of the party they belong to, service to the nation is our first responsibility. Every NDA MP has to work by prioritising the country, this is what the PM urged," Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said.

He added that PM Modi also asked MPs to follow Parliamentary rules while addressing the house.

The prime minister said that the parliament is a great learning place for MPs and that parliamentarians should gain as much as they can.

"The way we have seen Parliamentary traditions being flouted recently during Speaker election and other instances...Learning from the PM's experience means a lot, we got his guidance on it today. During my first two times as an MP, I spent a lot of time in the House to learn," Union Minister Chirag Paswan said.

PM Modi's motion of thanks

The 16-hour debate in Lok Sabha commenced this morning, with the House set to sit till late Monday night.

The debate is likely to conclude on Tuesday evening, following which Modi would respond, the sources said.

The debate on the Motion of Thanks could not begin on Friday due to repeated disruptions caused by the opposition over the NEET exam paper leak issue.
