YOUR NETFLIX SUBSCRIPTION COULD SOON COST MORE AS COMPANY PLANS TO DISCONTINUE CHEAPEST AD-FREE PLAN

Netflix is reportedly phasing out its Basic plan — the cheapest in most markets — for its existing subscribers in more regions after discontinuing it for new or returning members in the US, Canada, and the UK.

According to a report from The Verge, several Reddit users from the UK and Canada shared that received notifications from the video-streaming platform asking them to choose a new plan to continue watching.

For most markets, this would mean that users would have to opt for a more expensive Standard or Premium 4K plan. However, in the US, UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Spain, Netflix also offers the Basic with Ads tier.

About 40% of Netflix’s new customers are selecting the advertising option in markets where it’s available, the company said in its earnings report for the first quarter of 2024.

So far, Netflix has not made any announcements related to either dropping its Basic plan or introducing the Basic with Ads plan in India. These could happen at the same time as well, where the Basic is replaced with the ad-supported tier in India.

The Basic with Ads plan costs $6.99 per month in the US as compared to the $15.49 Basic plan.

The company added 9.33 million customers in the first quarter of 2024 and attracted new customers from all over the world, showing particular strength in the US and Canada, after following through on its password-sharing crackdown last year.
