As Microsoft's fiscal year concluded on June 30, 2024, the tech giant announced another round of job cuts, according to a report by The Times of India (TOI) citing GeekWire. Such organizational changes are common as the company enters a new financial year.
In the TOI report, a Microsoft spokesperson commented on the layoffs, stating, “Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business.” The spokesperson further added, “We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft's workforce expanded rapidly, with the company employing 232,000 people by 2022, according to GeekWire's analysis of regulatory filings and earnings reports cited in the TOI report. By the end of 2023, the global headcount was approximately 227,000. The tech industry has seen significant job cuts this year, with over 100,000 employees losing their jobs, as noted by TOI citing Layoffs.fyi.
