IPHONE 15 AND 15 PLUS USERS WON’T GET THE APPLE INTELLIGENCE UPGRADE AND NOW WE KNOW WHY

Apple Intelligence features were revealed at the WWDC 2024 and most iPhone users were satiating at the thought of using these tools on their devices soon. However, the excitement was short lived as the company shared the details about which iPhone models will support the AI features.

As you would expect the premium iPhone 15 Pro and the 15 Pro Max models will get the power of Apple Intelligence, while the millions who bought the iPhone 15 and iPhone Plus variants miss out on the chance to use Apple’s AI tech.

Apple has widely looked at premiumisation of its lineup and the AI features seem to be part of that trajectory. As pointed out by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus and powered by the older A16 Bionic chipset along with 6GB RAM.

Kuo suggests that Apple Intelligence features need the new A17 Pro chipset that the premium iPhone Pros offer but you also need the additional 8GB memory to get the best experience of the AI features from Apple. The A16 was never primed to get AI features as the A17 Pro chipset had the more powerful NPU to handle the complex AI tasks on-device, including the support for the new-gen Siri.

The analyst also mentioned that Apple’s AI system relies on an on-device 3B large language model (LLM) that uses a mixed 2-bit and 4-bit configuration, and requires about 0.7-1.5GB of memory to run effectively. Apple’s high standard to run AI means people will have to consider upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or the upcoming iPhone 16 models later this year which only means more money into Apple’s coffers over the next few years.
