SHANKAR: ‘I IMAGINED A CINEMATIC UNIVERSE WITH INDIAN, SIVAJI, AND MUDHALVAN BUT DIDN’T GET ANY ENCOURAGEMENT’

Creating a cinematic universe is a trend now, more so in Tamil cinema because of Lokesh Kanagaraj. Following suit, Gautham Menon and many directors down south explored the idea and got middling results. Recently, director Shankar shared that he had an idea of a cinematic universe even before LCU came into existence. In an interview, the filmmaker was asked about the cinematic universes, and he admitted to having an idea of bringing together three of his hit heroes for a film.

"You won't believe... In 2008, while I was filming Robot, an idea came to me for a film which has Hindustani, one-day-chief minister Nayak, and Sivaji. I just got a thought or a one-line or an idea... I was so excited. Then I called all my assistant directors and told them the idea and asked them what they felt about it. Everyone just stared at me with contempt," Shankar said.

"I then told some senior technicians. Since it was coming from me, they couldn't say anything bad. So, they just smiled and left. I didn't get any encouragement. So, after a few years, I saw Avengers. That's when I told my assistants that if they have an idea they should do it immediately because there are so many people across the world thinking about it. You should be the first one to do it," he added.

It has to be noted that Shankar's Chitti The Robot made a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan's Ra One (2011) making it a unique crossover between Bollywood and Kollywood.

Currently, Shankar, Kamal Haasan, and Siddharth are touring Singapore and Malaysia to promote Indian 2, which is releasing in theatres on July 12. The movie is a sequel to the National Award-winning film Indian (1996). Other than Kamal Haasan, it also stars Rakul Preet Singh, the late Nedumudi Venu, Kajal Aggarwal, Bobby Simha, and Priya Bhavani Shankar.
