RUSSIA TARGETS UKRAINE'S TV NETWORK, STRIKES 240-METER TOWER CAUSING TELEVISION BLACKOUT IN 2ND LARGEST CITY

On Monday, a footage from Kharkiv, Ukraine going viral on social media shows the dramatic collapse of a 240-meter television tower. It was a critical piece of infrastructure for the city's broadcasting services. According to local authorities, the incident was likely the result of a missile strike, indicative of the ongoing conflict in the region.

The second-largest city in Ukraine is affected by the breakdown of digital television signals caused by the tower's demolition, according to The Hindu. Governor Oleh Syniehubov acknowledged these disruptions and emphasized the difficulties that still remain in getting communication services back up and running.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported since, before the collapse, workers had taken cover in shelters. Still, the video captures the spectacular moment when the main mast of the tower collapsed, sending massive clouds of smoke shooting into the air.

Kharkiv prosecutors have claimed that a cruise Kh-59 missile may have been involved, even if the exact type of the projectile is still unclear from the video, per NDTV. This might indicate that Russian soldiers were deliberately targeting the target.

This latest attack is similar to earlier ones that occurred in March 2022, when tensions escalated after Russia invaded Ukraine and the broadcast tower was also attacked. The area, especially Kharkiv and the surrounding areas, have been subjected to constant attacks in recent weeks, making an already grave situation worse due to a lack of sufficient air defense capabilities, NDTV wrote.

The impact of Moscow's onslaught on civilian infrastructure—like the broadcast tower—highlights the gravity of the ongoing conflict and the difficulties the Ukrainian people confront.

Moscow continues to assert its claim to the Donetsk region, where its forces have been making significant progress.

Novomykhailivka was taken prisoner by the Russian defense ministry, just after the head of Ukrainian military intelligence warned that fighting conditions for his country's forces in the east will likely get much harsher in the coming weeks.

For months, despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Russian soldiers have been keeping back Ukrainian forces. It is expected that they will soon strengthen their attack, The Hindu reports.
