ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR: 97 JOURNALISTS KILLED SINCE START OF CONFLICT, SAYS CPJ REPORT; GAZA GOVT SAYS JOURNO DEATH TOLL IS OVER 140

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) revealed on Wednesday the grim toll inflicted on journalists amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. According to their preliminary investigations, 97 journalists and media workers have been confirmed as victims since the war’s onset. Additionally, 25 journalists have been detained, while four remain missing.

CPJ Program Director Carlos Martínez de la Serna emphasised the profound sacrifice journalists make in pursuit of truth during times of conflict. He stated, “Since the Israel-Gaza war began, journalists have been paying the highest price—their lives—to defend our right to the truth.”

Despite international efforts, ensuring the safety of journalists and maintaining news coverage in the conflict zone has proven to be a persistent challenge. While CPJ’s count stands at 97 casualties, Gaza’s government media office reports a toll exceeding 140, a report by Al Jazeera stated. The International Federation of Journalists estimates the death toll among journalists at 102.

Following a request by two international media agencies’ for assurances that their personnel would not be targeted by Israeli strikes, the Israel Defense Forces initially informed Reuters and Agence France-Presse that they could not guarantee the safety of their journalists operating in Gaza.

Journalists in Gaza confront significant risks as they report on the conflict, including the threat of devastating airstrikes, disrupted communications, supply shortages and prolonged power outages.
