PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN MANIPUR TODAY DUE TO HEAVY RAINS, SCHOOLS TO BE CLOSED FOR 2 DAYS

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey has declared a public holiday on Wednesday due to heavy rains in the state and severe flooding in several areas.

In a statement, the governor said that all government offices including public sector undertakings, corporations, autonomous bodies, societies under the Manipur government, banks and other financial institutions will remain closed on June 3.

Similarly, the Manipur Directorate of Education-School has announced holidays for all schools in the state, including private schools, on Wednesday and Thursday as a precautionary measure in view of the flood-like conditions in several regions.

Incessant rains over the last few days have caused overflow of the rivers in Manipur, inundating several places in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts.

The water level of the main rivers of Manipur, including Imphal River, Iril River, Nambul River, Nambol River, Thoubal River, and Manipur River, is flowing at a high flood level and is still rising.

Five gates of the Ithai Barrage are open, while four gates of the Imphal Barrage are fully opened.

The state water resources department, in its daily flood report updated till 5 am on Tuesday, mentioned that Kangpokpi district recorded the highest rainfall of 96 mm.

The Manipur government issued a public advisory on Monday evening, stating that the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall for the state for the next five days.

The advisory informed the public to avoid staying in vulnerable structures, take shelter during thunderstorms and lightning.

It added that people should avoid working in the fields during thunderstorms and ensure proper mechanisms to avoid run-off in case of rain.

The advisory directed all the deputy commissioners to promptly issue guidance on precautions to mitigate the anticipated calamities at the earliest. The public advisory also included helpline numbers for 18 different control rooms.

The government is carrying out rescue and relief work through the respective district administrations and the concerned departments.

"The general public is appealed to stay indoors except in case of emergency so that the authorities can carry out the rescue & relief operations and evacuation of the stranded individuals smoothly," it said.

The state health department also issued a directive, advising all the chief medical officers not to leave their respective stations and ensure the continuity of healthcare services in all public health facilities.

It further stated that the officers should coordinate with the respective district administration for necessary management.
