PORTION OF NEW TERMINAL’S CANOPY COLLAPSES AT MP’S JABALPUR AIRPORT, DAMAGES INCOME TAX OFFICIAL’S CAR

The portion of a canopy of the new terminal building of Jabalpur airport in Madhya Pradesh caved in and fell on a car after heavy rainfall on Thursday.

The damaged car belongs to an Income Tax official. No one was injured in the incident as the driver left after parking the vehicle in the porch outside the main gate of the terminal building.

The airport authority has launched an investigation into the incident. State Public Works Minister Rakesh Singh said that “an accident at the airport has been reported and an investigation is underway to prevent such incidents in the future.”

According to officials, amid heavy rain, water began accumulating which increased the weight of the canopy’s tent and caused the iron tent section to fall on the car.

A statement by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Jabalpur read, “Due to continuous rainfall since yesterday evening, a part of the fabric canopy, constructed for the aesthetic appeal of the newly-built building at Jabalpur Airport, accumulated water and the fabric tore. This caused the water to fall on the car parked below, damaging the car's roof and windows. Technical reasons for the incident are being investigated to ensure such incidents do not recur. The AAI (Jabalpur), regrets this incident and assures comprehensive resolution.”

Recently, Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav had announced that the airport would be renamed after queen Rani Durgavati.

A senior official said, “It must be understood that the building is newly- constructed and has experienced its first rain. The investigation will determine any technical faults, and the project in-charge of this building is also being consulted.”

As per a PIB release, the upgradation work at the airport includes construction of New Terminal Building, ATC Tower, Technical Block, Fire Station Category VII, other buildings and Extension of runway & associated works to cater the operations of AB-320 type of aircraft.

“Madhya Pradesh Govt handed over 483 acres of land to AAI for development work in 2015, total land measuring 774 acres. The new terminal building, equipped with world-class passenger facilities, will have the capacity to handle 500 passengers during peak hours. The new building will be built with eco-friendly, sustainable material and equipped with solar plant and energy efficient equipment,” the release read.
