LAC STANDOFF: WHAT HAPPENED IN FIVE BRIEF MEETINGS BETWEEN INDIA-CHINA TROOPS

While the situation along the ground at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) hasn’t changed much in recent months, Indians and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army met briefly on five occasions late last month.

  1. There was a ground commanders' interaction on April 24 in the evening, in the Chushul-Moldo area in East Ladakh. This lasted for less than an hour.
  2. Earlier, there was a ground commanders' interaction in the Vasundhara Gap in the Chushul area. Ground commanders are usually middle-level officers (colonels and sometimes brigadiers) tasked with sorting out local differences. It helped to resolve minor tensions and lasted for over an hour.
  3. On the same day, the two sides met briefly in Doka La, Sikkim. Six PLA personnel were present.
  4. Later, another eight PLA personnel were involved in a meeting in the nearby Gora La.
  5. Another short meeting took place in the eastern part of the LAC, with about a dozen PLA personnel present.
Overall, the situation isn’t very different. While there are troops facing each other in two places since the Galwan incident took place four years ago, there are still large concentrations a distance away. The process of de-escalation has not happened as yet.
