HATHRAS STAMPEDE: OVER 90 DEAD AT 'BHOLE BABA' SATSANG, PM MODI ASSURES HELP, NDRF CALLED IN - LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Hathras: The death toll in the Hathras stampede has risen to 98. The stampede occurred at a religious event in the district. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims of the Hathras incident during his address in the Lok Sabha. The Prime Minister assured of all possible help from the Centre. "Senior officials in the Central Government are in touch with the Uttar Pradesh Government. All possible help will be given to the victims of the tragedy," PM Modi said.

The religious event was being held in Mughalgarhi village of Hathras district when the stampede occurred. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Among the deceased, several were women and children. the event was organised by a self-proclaimed godman.

Several people were also injured in the stampede. Casualties are expected to rise as the condition of some injured people is reported to be critical.

  • The incident occurred at a 'satsang' event in Pulrai village where people had gathered in large numbers.
  • Victims, dead or unconscious, were brought to the Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre in trucks and other vehicles. The bodies were laid outside the health centre as people milled around them.
  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede and instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures. He announced a compensation of Rs two lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
  • The state government said an FIR will be registered against the organisers of the programme.
  • The UP CM also directed the district administration to arrange for proper treatment of those injured and immediately take them to hospitals. He wished them a speedy recovery.
  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been called in to assist the rescue operation.
  • The initial findings indicated that the private event was organised by self-proclaimed godman "Bhole Baba," also known as Narayana Sakar Hari. The event was permitted by the SDM of Hathras
  • The venue was over crowded. According to District administration, the stampede happened because of heat and humidity.
  • A high-level committee, led by ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh, has been tasked with investigating the incident and determining the causes behind the tragic stampede.

"The news of the death of many devotees including women and children in the tragedy that took place in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is heart-rending. I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," the President tweeted in Hindi.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. May God give them strength to bear this pain. The local administration is engaged in relief work. I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured," Amit Shah said.

"Just now learnt that in a sad incident of stampede, at least 27 devotees (including 23 women and 3 children) have succumbed to death at Hathras, UP. My heart goes out to their family members. Sincere condolences to the bereaved kins,' Mamata Banerjee said in her 'X' post.
