GUJARAT SETS NEW ADMISSION RULES FOR CLASS 11 SCIENCE STUDENTS

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has announced new rules for students seeking admission to Class 11 science streams.

These rules, issued on Thursday, aim to ensure that students are adequately prepared for the rigours of science education in groups A (non-medical) and AB (both biology and maths).

According to the new guidelines, students must have cleared the basic mathematics subject in their Class 10 board examination with a minimum of 33 percent marks, excluding any grace marks. This requirement ensures that students have a foundational understanding of mathematics, which is essential for science subjects.

Since the 2021-22 academic year, Class 10 students in Gujarat have been appearing for two sets of mathematics exams – basic and standard. The new rules specifically address those who opted for the basic maths exam, setting a clear benchmark for their progression to higher studies in science.

SEPARATE TEST FOR STANDARD MATHS

To further assess the ability and aptitude of students, schools are directed to conduct a separate 30-mark test based on the standard maths syllabus.

This test will include 15 multiple-choice questions and 15 subjective questions, and students must score at least 33 percent to qualify for admission to Class 11 A or AB groups.

This additional assessment ensures that only students with sufficient mathematical skills advance to the demanding science streams.

PERFORMANCE REVIEW AND REGULAR TESTING

In addition to the maths test, schools are required to arrange personal meetings with students to review their academic performance from Classes 6 to 10. This holistic evaluation helps in understanding the students' overall academic journey and preparedness for science education.

Moreover, the new rules mandate regular mathematics tests in Class 11 to continuously monitor and support students' progress. These ongoing assessments aim to reinforce mathematical skills, which are critical for success in science subjects.

PARENTAL NOTIFICATION

GSHSEB has also instructed schools to inform parents and students about these new rules. This transparency ensures that all stakeholders are aware of the requirements and can adequately prepare for the transition to Class 11 Science streams.

With these new rules, the GSHSEB aims to ensure that only students with adequate mathematical proficiency and academic preparedness are admitted to the science streams, thereby enhancing the quality of education and student outcomes in Gujarat.
