ANANT-RADHIKA WEDDING: NITA AMBANI BULK ORDERS THIS UNIQUE BANARASI SARI; KNOW WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT LAKKHA BUTI SARI

During her visit to Varanasi, Nita Ambani, chairperson of the Reliance Foundation and wife of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, made headlines not only for her spiritual pursuits but also for her keen interest in the city's renowned Banarasi saris.

Visit to the holy city

While in Varanasi to offer prayers at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple and extend an invitation for her son Anant's wedding, the pretty would-be mother-in-law Nita Ambani took the opportunity to indulge in local delights. She enjoyed the famed Banarasi chaat and made a significant stop at a weaver’s store to purchase saris for the upcoming nuptials.

In her visit to the weaver Vijay Maurya’s home in the Ramnagar district, she observed the intricate process of sari making on the handloom. Nita was captivated by the exquisite embroidery and craftsmanship. Earlier, she had invited several Banarasi businesspeople and artisans to her hotel, where she reviewed and selected saris. She placed orders with multiple weavers, showcasing her deep appreciation for their artistry.

Angika Kushwaha, a PhD in textile and a sari manufacturer from Ramnagar, mentioned that Nita Ambani selected their 'Lakkha Buti' sari, crafted using the traditional 'kadhua technique' and featuring one lakh butis. Angika’s father, Amresh Kushwaha, chairman of the UP Industrial Cooperative Association, confirmed that Nita Ambani purchased over a hundred saris from various weavers for the wedding.

What makes Lakkha Buti sari so special?

The Banarasi Lakkha Buti sari is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship and rich heritage of Banaras (Varanasi), India. Renowned for its luxurious texture and intricate detailing, this sari is a symbol of opulence and tradition. The term "Lakkha Buti" refers to the small, delicate motifs that are meticulously woven into the fabric, often using gold and silver threads. These motifs, inspired by Mughal designs, include intricate floral patterns, paisleys, and leaves, creating a stunning visual effect. The weaving process is incredibly labor-intensive, requiring the skill and precision of experienced artisans who often spend weeks, if not months, on a single piece. The silk used in Banarasi saris is of the highest quality, contributing to the garment's lustrous finish and elegant drape. Traditionally, Banarasi Lakkha Buti saris are worn on special occasions such as weddings and festivals, where their grandeur is perfectly suited to celebratory events. Each sari is a unique masterpiece, reflecting the cultural and artistic legacy of Banaras, and continues to be a cherished heirloom passed down through generations.

Her visit concluded with her participating in the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Nita Ambani's trip to Varanasi highlighted not just her religious devotion but also her support and admiration for the traditional Banarasi sari industry, making her visit a memorable blend of spirituality and cultural appreciation.
