8 LAKH CANNABIS PLANTS, SAPLINGS DESTROYED IN TRIPURA’S SEPAHIJALA DISTRICT

Nearly eight lakh plants and saplings of cannabis were destroyed at the Boxanagar area of Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Wednesday. The operation was conducted on nearly four acre of land used for illegal cultivation of cannabis.

The raid was conducted by a team of police officers headed by officer in-charge of Kalamchoura Police Station Naru Gopal Deb. Sub-inspectors Biswajit Debbarma and Shanti Tripura and personnel of the Tripura State Rifles were among the team.

The police said it also destroyed cannabis nurseries north of Baba Bricks Industry in the Veluarchar area of the district. "We shall continue to do such operations in the coming days," a police officer said.

Sepahijala district shares the highest length of international border with Bangladesh among all other districts of Tripura. Some parts of the district still remain unfenced due to local disputes.

Ever since 2018, when the BJP came to power in Tripura, the state government has been regularly cracking down on the illegal drugs trade. Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha admitted that there has been a rise in drug related activities recently and said drug peddlers are using Tripura as a corridor. He added that in Tripura, the highest amount of seizure of illegal drugs and their subsequent destruction has been carried out.
