UP GOVERNMENT SETS NEW DEADLINE FOR NOIDA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ASKS OFFICIALS TO ENSURE START OF COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS BY DECEMBER

The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday (June 28) directed officials to ensure that Noida International Airport begins commercial operations by December this year. Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra issued these instructions following a review meeting and a physical inspection of the airport site in Jewar, Gautam Buddh Nagar.

Development for the project’s first phase is currently underway. The visit by the Chief Secretary followed an announcement by the airport developer, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), that commercial operations were delayed from September 29, 2024, to April 2025.

Air traffic control building to be completed by August 

YIAPL, a special purpose vehicle of Zurich Airport International AG, briefed Mishra during the meeting that Tata Projects is progressing with the construction of the air traffic control (ATC) building. The building is slated for completion by August, with ATC equipment installation expected by September.

“The building will be handed over to the Airport Authority of India for ATC equipment installation by August, and the installation will be completed by September,” according to an official statement.

What tasks are completed at Noida airport? 

According to an official statement, current activities include electrical lighting installation on the runway and apron, with navigation equipment like the glide path antenna and localizer already installed near the runway.

“The chief secretary directed officials concerned that all equipment to be installed by the Airport Authority of India must be completed by September… He instructed them that the airport’s development should be completed on time by September 2024, and commercial operations must commence by December,” the statement said.

What tasks are remaining at Noida airport? 

During the terminal building inspection, YIAPL informed Mishra that facade and roof work is in progress, and finishing work on the pier has begun. Installation of the automated baggage handling system is also advancing.

Key figures including CEO Christoph Schnellmann, COO Kiran Jain, Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) CEO Arun Vir Singh, and project nodal officer Shailendra Bhatia updated Mishra on project developments.

When will Noida airport start its commercial operations? 

Mishra instructed YIAPL to ensure compliance with all departmental regulations and resolve any outstanding issues by September. “Commercial operations of the airport must commence in December without fail,” Mishra asserted.

Furthermore, Mishra directed YIAPL to present a catch-up plan by July 15, following a meeting with Tata Projects representatives. 

The meeting also addressed security, communication, navigation, surveillance systems for air traffic management, and interactions with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and relevant central agencies.
