IIT PLACEMENT WOES CONTINUE; 50-57% OF IIT JAMMU, PALAKKAD'S STUDENTS YET TO SECURE JOBS

Amid the hiring slowdown among freshers, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu and IIT Palakkad are yet to place 50 percent and 57 of their students, respectively.

According to a Right to Information (RTI) filed by Dheeraj Singh, IIT Kanpur alumnus and founder of Global IIT Alumni Support Group, out of the 251 students of IIT Jammu who registered for placements, only 126 were able to receive job offers in the ongoing placement round.

Based on the data seen by Moneycontrol, in the 2023 placement season, only 33 students were not placed in IIT Jammu compared to 125 in the current placement season.

Similarly at IIT Palakkad, 118 students, out of 273 who registered, received jobs or were placed through campus placements (including via pre-placement offers) in 2024 till date.

Moneycontrol has written to both IITs for comments and the story will be updated accordingly.

Although the median salary at IIT Palakkad remained stable from 11.5 lakh per annum (LPA) in 2023 to 12 LPA in 2024, IIT Jammu experienced a major drop.

In 2023, IIT Jammu recorded a median salary of 16 LPA, it currently stands at 11 LPA.

To be sure, the placement is still ongoing and the numbers could change in the future.

Earlier this month, Singh claimed that around 30 percent of students in the top-ranked older IITs  remain unplaced, while around 50 percent of students in the newer IITs are still awaiting placement.

IIT Madras said, “Students have varied interests - to pursue higher studies, some want to establish their own startups and venture into entrepreneurship, while some want to attempt competitive exams including civil services. They take time to decide. The placement data will be available at the end of July 2024, post convocation,” the institute told Moneycontrol in a statement.
