EX-GOOGLE EMPLOYEE SAYS LOSING JOB HELPED HIM FIND HIS TRUE CALLING, LISTS WHAT TO DO AFTER GETTING LAID OFF

Google made a lot of headlines last year for laying off thousands of employees abruptly. Many employees, from across the globe, took to LinkedIn and shared their experiences. While some recalled how traumatising it was to get the layoff mail at wee hours in the morning, others took the news rather positively and mentioned that they would now explore other, better options. One such employee, who was fired by Google about a year ago, has now expressed his opinion on LinkedIn.

In a post, he revealed how losing what he thought was his "dream job" (at Google) led him to find his true calling - starting a business.

"A year ago, I received the dreaded email. I was one of the many casualties of the mass #techlayoffs. It was like a bad dream. I had always been on an upward trajectory at Google and I was proud of the work that I'd achieved," the employee wrote at the beginning of the post.

He then mentioned the things that he didn't do after getting laid off. These involve, doom scrolling LinkedIn, applying for jobs he didn't really care about, using his network poorly, braving his emotions etc.

He then revealed that instead of all of this, he logged out of LinkedIn and focused on himself which involved riding his bike. He then mentioned that he decided what he really wanted from a job and started looking for companies and people who are already involved in doing the work that he wants to do. Then, he leveraged his network to connect to those companies and people and joined a "men's group where he could exercise every week."

"Thankfully this new approach paid off. I discovered how and where to position myself in the market and ultimately decided to start my own business. I leveraged my network to find my first clients, who trusted me and gave me a chance I'll forever be grateful for," he added.

A couple of months back, another Google employee, who had lost her job in January, shared how she took a break after her layoff.

The ex-Google employee shared on LinkedIn that taking a break allowed her to recharge before getting into the job market again. She added how the job world has its share of challenges these days and that she is trying to find a role where she can "immerse herself in enhancing processes and untangling complex problems."
