CHATGPT CAN NOW REMEMBER INSTRUCTIONS ACROSS ALL CHATS, OPENAI BRINGS MEMORY FEATURE TO MORE USERS

Back in 2022, when ChatGPT had just rolled out to the public, people were marvelling over its human-like responses and ability to remember instructions clearly. However, these instructions were forgotten by the AI chatbot if the conversation went on for a long time, or when the user started a new chat altogether. For instance, if you asked ChatGPT to draft an article, it would do that in a couple of seconds. Then, if you asked it to change the article's narrative style, it would know what article you are referring to. However, if you switch to a new chat, the AI chatbot won't remember what article you were talking about in the previous chat. But now, this won't be the case.

OpenAI's ChatGPT can now remember instructions across all chats. This feature called Memory is currently available only for paying users aka ChatGPT Plus subscribers. The feature was announced back in February this year but was made available to limited testers. Now, it is available to all ChatGPT Plus members (except for those in Europe and Korea) and OpenAI announced the same in a post on X.

The company's post reads, "Memory is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users. Using Memory is easy: just start a new chat and tell ChatGPT anything you'd like it to remember. Memory can be turned on or off in settings and is not currently available in Europe or Korea. Team, Enterprise, and GPTs to come."

Memory helps ChatGPT tailor its responses to you more effectively. You can actively tell ChatGPT what to remember, or it can pick up on things from your conversations, much like other apps do with their algorithms. This feature, thus, helps ChatGPT remember your preferences and instructions so that you don't have to remind the same every time you start a conversation.

It is to be noted that users can control what ChatGPT remembers about them. Hence, they can manage Memory and choose what they would want the AI tool to remember and what they want it to forget. The feature can also be entirely turned off. All that you need to do is head over to Settings > Personalization > Memory and toggle it off.

OpenAI, in a blog post in February, had given an example of how the Memory feature could be of use. "You've explained that you prefer meeting notes to have headlines, bullets and action items summarized at the bottom. ChatGPT remembers this and recaps meetings this way," the post had read.
