SOUTHERN RAILWAY SHARES MAJOR UPDATE ON REDEVELOPMENT OF VILLUPURAM RAILWAY STATION, SAYS ‘50% OF WORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED’

The Southern Railway announced to redevelop the Villupuram station which is a gateway to the southern regions of Tamil Nadu. According to an official statement, the authorities have allocated about Rs. 23.29 crore for station redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme including the construction of FOB. According to the statement, 50% of the redevelopment work has been completed, with the remaining projects targeted for completion by the end of August 2024.

The rail route is considered one of the most important routes as it connects the Chennai–Viluppuram–Tiruchirappalli and Villupuram–Tiruvannamalai–Katpadi lines. These upgrades aim to improve passenger amenities and the overall travel experience, making the station a more comfortable and efficient transit point for travellers across Tamil Nadu and beyond.

Key Passenger-Centric Enhancements

Arrival Terminal: A new arrival terminal will be constructed, featuring an air-conditioned waiting hall where passengers and tourists can rest and relax during their stay at the station.

Sanitation Facilities: New toilet blocks will be constructed, and existing ones will be renovated to ensure clean and hygienic facilities for all passengers.

Foot Over Bridge: A 6.00-meter wide foot over bridge will be built to provide seamless access to different parts of the station.

Road Connectivity and Parking: Efforts to improve road connectivity and parking facilities will be undertaken. The front side road will be upgraded for easier vehicle access, and pedestrian walkways will be developed for commuter convenience.

Platform Enhancements: Passenger platforms will receive significant upgrades, including the addition of benches, water taps, and shelters to ensure a comfortable and pleasant experience for travelers.

Water Management: Construction of a septic tank, stormwater drains, and additional submersible pumps will maximize water availability from bore wells and open wells, catering to the growing needs of the station and its passengers.

Aesthetic Improvements: A ‘Feel Good’ approach will be adopted to elevate the overall ambiance of Villupuram station. The existing terminal building will be renovated, and a new porch will be constructed, adding an element of grandeur to the station’s facade.

Logistics and Accessibility: The introduction of a parcel office building and provision of trolley paths will streamline logistical operations, enhancing the station’s efficiency. To promote inclusivity, platforms will be equipped with 2.10-meter-wide edge strips with tactile coping slabs, facilitating safe and convenient boarding and alighting for differently-abled passengers.

Energy Efficiency: Solar power panels and LED lights, including low-height masts with LED lights, will be installed to promote energy savings.

Ongoing Projects

  • Construction of a new enhanced portico for the departure building
  • Construction of an AC waiting hall
  • Upgradation of Platform 01 surface
  • Redevelopment of the parking area
  • Construction of an entrance arch
  • Construction of a GRP building
  • Construction of a parcel office
  • Improvements to waiting halls
  • Construction of a 6.00-meter wide foot over bridge
  • Improvements to landscaping
  • Improvements to approach roads with pedestrian pathways
  • Construction of additional platform shelters

Overall, 50% of the redevelopment work has been completed, with the remaining projects targeted for completion by the end of August 2024.
