OPENAI IS WORKING ON A NEW FEATURE TO GIVE DIRECT COMPETITION TO GOOGLE SEARCH

OpenAI, the creator of one of the leading powerful language models, ChatGPT, is now gearing up to enter the search engine market. According to reports, OpenAI is developing a feature for ChatGPT that will allow it to crawl the web for answers and cite its sources, similar to how Google Search works.

This search feature for ChatGPT will position OpenAI as a direct competitor to Alphabet Inc.'s Google and other AI-powered search startups like Perplexity. According to Bloomberg, the search feature will significantly enhance ChatGPT's capabilities. Users will be able to ask questions and receive responses that incorporate relevant details from the web, along with citations to sources like Wikipedia articles or blog posts. Additionally, the system might even include visuals like diagrams to accompany written instructions.

Interestingly, OpenAI's plans of entering the search engine market aren't entirely unexpected. The company is facing growing pressure to expand ChatGPT's functionalities, particularly as competitors flood the market with new chatbots. Additionally, search has become a focal point for the AI industry. For instance, Perplexity has garnered significant attention and a hefty valuation with its AI-powered search engine that emphasises accuracy and source attribution. Google, too, is actively reimagining its core search experience around AI and is likely to unveil its latest plans involving its Gemini AI models at its upcoming I/O event.

The user interface for the ChatGPT search engine has yet to be revealed. It is likely to adapt based on the device used, potentially displaying web results and AI summaries side by side on desktops and stacking them one after another on smartphones. Microsoft's Copilot, which integrates GPT-4 with the Bing search engine, offers a similar glimpse into how the ChatGPT search engine might look and function.

It is likely that OpenAI is setting the stage to make its GPT chatbot more powerful. Notably, fueling speculation about OpenAI's search ambitions is a recent webpage, "search.chatgpt.com," reportedly displaying a "not found" message. This URL briefly redirects to ChatGPT's official website, hinting at a potential imminent launch. Additionally, reports suggest OpenAI has registered a new domain name for a "ChatGPT search engine" and acquired a security certificate, further bolstering these theories.

However, nothing has been made official by OpenAI yet, but it is expected to make its official unveiling soon. Once live, it will definitely provide direct competition to Google, which maintains a dominant position in the search engine market, holding approximately 90 per cent of the market share. After Google, Microsoft's Bing holds the second place in the search engine market. Microsoft is already stepping up its search and AI game with its Copilot feature, which integrates the GPT-4 model into its Bing search engine.

As for availability, a post by an influencer suggests that OpenAI might launch the ChatGPT search engine on May 9. There are more reports that suggest a potential launch in the coming days.
