HIRE-PROMOTE-FIRE: INDIAN TECHIE'S TESLA RIDE - READ POST

Elon Musk's electric vehicle giant, Tesla, has been under fire lately for layoffs, especially after giving employees promotions just a few weeks prior. A wave of layoffs spearheaded by Tesla began in April 2024, affecting up to 21,473 employees from 50 tech companies. With this action, Tesla aimed to cut about 10% from its total workforce.

Indian Techie's Tesla Ride:

An Indian tech professional who had worked for the company for seven years was one of the victims. She had been promoted a month earlier and was excited about moving from New Jersey to Washington, DC. Her dreams were dashed, though, when she got a "cold email" from Tesla telling her that her job was being terminated because of restructuring.

Tesla's layoff policy:

Jatin Saini, brother of the techie, posted the entire story on LinkedIn and expressed his shock at the lack of openness and compassion throughout the procedure. He emphasized the psychological toll on his sister, who, despite years of commitment to the business, felt alienated. Saini criticized Tesla's layoff policy, arguing that a more forceful approach would be preferable to a string of lesser layoffs.

Tesla's Mail:

Saini included screenshots of the "cold email" his sister got from Tesla in his post. He claimed that his sister had worked for Elon Musk's company for seven years, but that last Friday, she was abruptly let go. "Unfortunately as a result, your position has been eliminated by this restructuring," the email stated.

Saini wrote in his article that his sister had been enjoying a promotion and was eager to move from New Jersey to Washington, DC, only a month earlier. Her aspirations were crushed, though, on May 3, 2024, when she found that her workplace access card had been canceled when she arrived.

Saini wrote, "She is not alone. On April April, Tesla laid-off 16,000 employees. Then 15 days later, they laid-off another 500 employees. 2 days ago, she also got the email along with 75% of her team."

He said, "She's been with Tesla for over half a decade, and to find out like this...When you can't enter your own office; Your entire team is down and out; Your ID card is thrown away. They made her feel like an outsider with just 1 email.”

Saini questioned the process's lack of openness, compassion, and thoughtfulness in his piece. In his opinion, "the principle of 'cutting once and cutting deep' makes more sense than a series of smaller layoffs" when it comes to layoffs. "It's a clear reminder of the cost behind corporate decisions," Saini concluded.
