Drone footage has captured the scale of a major multi-vehicle pile-up that forced the closure of part of Interstate 196 in western Michigan during heavy lake-effect snow on Monday morning.
The crash occurred southeast of Grand Rapids at about 10:19 am local time, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office. Deputies said minor injuries were reported, but there were no fatalities.
Initial estimates from officers at the scene suggested that around 100 vehicles were involved. Video recorded from above shows long stretches of damaged cars and trucks, including at least six tractor-trailers clustered in one section of the wreckage. Michigan State Police later said between 30 and 40 semi-trucks were involved.
The pile-up led to the closure of I-196 between Zeeland and Hudsonville, from Exits 55 to 62. Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area while emergency crews worked at the scene.
Forecasters said the crash happened amid intense lake-effect snow. The FOX Forecast Center reported heavy blowing snow, with visibility reduced to as little as a quarter of a mile and wind gusts of between 25 and 40 mph. Temperatures were in the low teens, with overall visibility below one mile.
Some drivers were stranded on the highway and were told to remain inside their vehicles. The sheriff's office said buses were arranged to transport motorists to Hudsonville High School once it was safe to do so.
Officials said the highway would remain closed for several hours as drivers were evacuated and debris and damaged vehicles were cleared from the road.
