Jiocinema and Disney+ Hotstar have officially joined hands to bring a new OTT platform -- JioHotstar. The new platform, according to the announcement, will cater for content in 10 languages. In addition to content from the two merging companies, the platform will feature titles from various international studios and streaming services. JioHotstar will also aggregate content from the likes of NBCUniversal Peacock, Warner Bros, Discovery, HBO and Paramount, which is something no other streaming service offers at the moment.
JioHotstar is currently free to access, which means users can watch the content without a subscription. However, movies or series will show ads in between. This is a similar strategy that Jiocinema was using before the merger. But for the ad-free experience, the platform has confirmed that subscription plans will be available for users who want a higher resolution streaming, starting at Rs 149 per quarter. Let's delve deeper into the pricing and subscription plans.
JioHotstar has shared that the app offers two variants of subscription: Super and Premium. The key difference here is that when you subscribe to the Super plan, you will get all the premium content but with ads. The Premium plans aims to offer ads-free experience.
If using on mobile, users can subscribe to the JioHotstar app for Rs 149 per quarter, which means it will need a renewal every 3 months. You can also buy the plan for Rs 499 per year. This plan will let you use the platform only on one device at a time.
Other than this, JioHotstar offers a minimum of Rs 299 per quarter. The Super plan (with ads) starts at Rs 299 per 3 months and Rs 899 per year. The Premium plan (without ads) is priced at Rs 299 per month, Rs 499 per 3 months and Rs 1,499 per year.
It is noteworthy that with the Super plan, you can access content on 2 devices at a time and Premium works for 4 devices at a time.
While these plans will let you catch up on all the original and other global content like HBO series, the live sports tournaments will be available for free to all. Just like Jiocinema, users will not need a subscription to watch a livestream of any sports tournament, including Cricket, Tennis grand slams, Premier Leagues and more. However, will there be any paywall later, is a question to ponder.
Emphasising the platform's transformative role in sports, Sanjog Gupta, CEO â Sports, JioStar, said, "Sports in India is more than just a gameâit's a shared experience that unites millions. JioHotstar is revolutionizing how fans experience live sports, combining the best of technology, access, storytelling, and innovation with the fan at the heart of everything. Whether it's the pride in India Cricket, the electric atmospherics of Premier League, passion for India's indigenous sports or exposure for grassroot-level competitions, we will deliver a range of experiences, catering to both 'lean in' and 'lean back' behaviours across a billion screens."
He added that the platform is now "taking this philosophy beyond sports by bringing culture-defining live experiences to our audiences."
