Netflix has officially confirmed that the fifth season of its popular psychological thriller You will be the series’ final chapter. On January 16, the streaming giant released a teaser video announcing the release date and giving a brief glimpse of Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley, returning to New York City, where his twisted journey began. The teaser, which lasts one minute and 14 seconds, opens with Joe delivering his iconic dialogue: “Hello, you.”
The following haunting montage revisits some pivotal moments from the past seasons, highlighting Joe’s complex relationship with Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) and his latest victim, Marienne (Tati Gabrielle). “Here we are together again, back to where it began.,” says Joe in the teaser as the visuals set the tone for the new season, which will intertwine his present with the haunting echoes of his past actions.
Further, the teaser hints at a confrontation of Joe’s demons, both figurative and literal. “A lot has happened these many years together. Identities, cities, loves, complications,” he adds. As Joe reflects on his life, the camera pans to the infamous glass prison, a spine-chilling reminder of his methods to silence those who discover the truth behind his charming facade.
“But all that led me here to now, to where I was always meant to be. And the one constant, the one thing that has always been there for me, is you. You who have been there the whole time and will be there with me to the end. Goodbye, you,” Joe utters in the teaser, seemingly suggesting a thematic full-circle moment that may see him facing the consequences of his actions over the years.
According to the official synopsis, the upcoming season is about “Joe Goldberg’s return to New York City, where he tries to create a happy life with his new partner, Kate Galvin. However, his past and dark desires threaten his plans.”
The teaser of the fifth and final season of the psychological thriller ends with a message that says, “A Killer Finale,” and it is scheduled to premiere on the streaming giant on April 24. You first premiered in September 2018, and after four edge-of-the-seat thriller seasons, it is coming to an end this year.
Season 5 boasts a stellar cast, including Penn Badgley in his career-defining role as the protagonist, Joe Goldberg. Charlotte Richie, Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp and Griffin Matthews are joining him.
